Biological insecticides and pesticides

Biological crop protection products have attracted considerable support in recent years as their efficacy in commercial crops is demonstrated.

‘Biologicals’ draw on the properties of naturally-occurring organisms to provide a non-chemical fungicidal or insecticidal effect. For example, growers can control Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera with Bacillus thuringiensis products, powdery mildew in grapes with Trichoderma spp., and other plant pathogens with Bacillus subtilis.

Biological insecticides and pesticides are applied in a similar manner to conventional pesticides, but generally have a much lower or no impact on the environment. Biologicals often play a valuable role in integrated pest management (IPM) programmes, and often also met organic certification criteria.
